8 Tips on Basic Watch Care

Keeping your watch in working order is easy with some basic maintenance. Here’s a few tips on how to keep your watch functioning properly.

• Water resistant is not the same as waterproof. Please use caution when wearing your watch near water. Pease see this page for more information on water resistant watches. 
• Metal bands can be cleaned with mild soap and a soft toothbrush. Scrub the band gently and make sure to get in between the links. Wrap a paper towel around the watch case to prevent water contact.
• Never manually adjust the date on your watch when the hour hand is between the hours of 9 and 3 o’clock. This could damage the watches gears that automatically adjust the date. 
• An automatic watch should be worn daily to remain accurate. Wearing the watch daily ensures that the watch oil gets distributed evenly throughout the gears. When an automatic watch is not worn, the oil tends to dry out and clog the gears. This could cause damage when the watch is worn again. 
• Avoid extreme temperatures with your watch. We highly suggest that watches should never be worn in saunas, hot tubs, or showers. Extreme temperatures can cause the gasket seal to contract and expand. Even a slight change in shape can let water or condensation into the watch.
• High end Swiss watches should be taken to a watchmaker for a service approximately every 5 years. A watchmaker will make sure that the watch is oiled throughly and will look over the gears and springs to ensure they are working properly. 
• Change a watch battery soon after it dies. Watch batteries tend to leak after a period of time. Leaving a dead battery in a watch for months or years increases the chances of a battery leaking and causing damage to the internal movement of a watch.
• Avoid soaps and lotions from coming in contact with your watch. The fragrances and chemicals inside these products can cause an excessive build up inside the watch and cause the exterior to corrode.
